Micro Structure

Contains Type I & II nodular (spheroidal) graphite in accordance with ASTM A247. The rim contains approximately 200/250 nodules/square mm, and is essentially ferritic, with the core containing 90/150 nodules/square mm. The matrix contains small amounts of pearlite (5-25% depending on section size). Chill carbides will be less then 5%, well dispersed (at 100x magnification).

Heat Treat Response

Due to its ferritic structure, 65-45-12 Ductile Iron is not intended for hardening. Hardening is readily achieved using 80-55-06 Ductile Iron. Ductile Iron 65-45-12 can be annealed to improve impact strength and elongation values for certain applications or in some cases to meet ASTM A395 (Ferritic Ductile Iron Pressure-Retaining Castings for Use at Elevated Temperatures).
